4-Player Co-op

Subnautica 2 Multiplayer Guide

Cross-play, drop-in/drop-out and practical launch-week roles for a four-player first session.

How 4-player co-op works

Role Splits

The four roles a smooth team uses

Recommended division of labor for a 4-player team
Role Primary Job Recommended Gear Priority Unlock
Quartermaster Stays near base, refines materials, monitors power and keeps spare food, water and oxygen ready. Builder, repair tool, spare batteries Stable first base
Gatherer Runs short resource loops and feeds the Quartermaster a steady supply of basic materials. Scanner, tank upgrade, beacon Reliable resource loop
Scout Pushes outward, drops beacons, records landmarks and confirms map markers. Beacon stack, scanner, spare oxygen Safe route outward
Biologist Scans fauna and flora, tracks food and water, and warns the team before entering unknown ecosystems. Scanner, food, water, first aid Creature knowledge

Co-op risk patterns to watch

Treat these as launch-week safety habits until players confirm exact creature behavior:

Tight caves

Clustered players burn oxygen faster and block each other on exits. Send one scout in, keep the rest near the entrance, and mark the route with a beacon.

Resource noise

Four players strip a small area quickly and can lose their route home. Assign one player to beacon placement before everyone fans out.

Open deep water

Distant landmarks are already driving Reddit map speculation. Do not send the whole team toward an unconfirmed point until one scout has checked the return route.

Live now vs EA 1.2

What co-op is missing today - and what EA 1.2 adds

The current Early Access build is playable in 4-player co-op, but several quality-of-life co-op tools are still on the roadmap. Here is what you work around now versus what Unknown Worlds lists for the EA 1.2 Co-op Centric Update. See the full roadmap tracker for sequencing.

Co-op need Live now (workaround) Planned in EA 1.2
Voice communication External app (Discord) - no in-game voice yet. Voice Chat is a planned EA 1.2 addition.
Sharing items Drop items manually or use shared base storage. Player Trading is a planned EA 1.2 addition.
Reviving teammates A downed player respawns at a Biobed - no field revive. Player Revive is a planned EA 1.2 addition.
Coordination tools Beacons and pinged landmarks. HUD Signals, a Base Builder Tool and Pinned Recipes are planned EA 1.2 improvements.

FAQ

Co-op questions players ask

How many players is Subnautica 2 co-op?

Up to 4 players. Any single-player save can be opened to a team of four Pioneers with drop-in / drop-out joining - there is no separate multiplayer slot, and no story or content is locked behind co-op.

Is Subnautica 2 cross-platform?

Yes. The Steam store lists cross-platform multiplayer, so PC players (Steam, Epic) and Xbox Series X|S players can share a session. PlayStation and Switch are not Early Access platforms, so they cannot join.

What does the EA 1.2 update add for co-op?

The roadmap's EA 1.2 Co-op Centric Update lists Voice Chat, Emotes, Player Trading and Player Revive as planned additions, plus HUD Signals, a Base Builder Tool and a Pinned Recipes system. None are live yet - until patch notes ship, plan voice, item sharing and revives manually.
